now let’s go on a road trip!
JASPER
where to stay: Faimont Jasper Park Lodge, it is about a 10 minute drive away from the town itself but you will not be sorry when you wake up to an elk eating off your cottage lawn and tasting the best salads in all of the land
what to see: you can’t miss the columbia icefield and the glacier skywalk on your way in or out of jasper. make sure you visit athabasca falls and do the meadows hike at the foot of mount edith cavell, both true gems of the rocky mountains. once you are in town walk around and take in the fresh mountain air. marilyn monroe famously stayed in jasper while filming ‘river of no return‘ (watch that also if you have a chance), because things stay fairly untouched in these mountain towns you can still see the same spots she went to on her visit here. take a ride up the jasper sky tram and end your day at the miette hot springs.
LAKE LOUISE
where to stay: chateau lake louise, the post hotel, deer lodge
what to do: lake louise is a destination in and of itself but there is so much to do while you are already there. enjoy a hike to one of the two beautiful tea houses on top of the mountain, the lake agnes tea house hike takes about an hour and is the easier of the two, the plain of six glaciers tea house takes about three hours, is much more rewarding and has endless photo opportunities. you can continue hiking from there to the abbott pass view point to get a closer look at the lower victoria glacier. if you are feeling adventurous you can do both hikes in one day via the highline trail and take about 5 hours to complete. but don’t forget to stop and take it all in while you’re there. while you are in lake louise make sure to visit moraine lake and even try out canoeing. visit samson mall on the way out to grab a well deserved ice cream at the old tyme candy shoppe and check out the lake louise visitor centre for some photo ops and more information. if you are up to take in some more outstanding hikes in the area make sure to drive down to johnston canyon for some beautiful waterfalls and a longer hike to the ink pots meadows.
BANFF
where to stay: banff is by far the most touristy of our three destinations (and the closest to the city), it has an array of amazing accommodations where you can stay, including, of course, the most famous, banff springs hotel and the rimrock resort
what to do: there is not a shortage of things to do while you are in banff. with their newly opened banff centre the town is home to many festivals and events, check their website for what is coming up during your visit. you don’t want to miss a ride on the banff gondola, little known fact: you used to be able to hike up sulphur mountain and catch a free ride to the bottom for free, but now you need to pay both ways (sorry!), right next door to the gondola are the famous banff upper hot springs, go for an afternoon soak and to wind down and even rent a historical two piece bathing suit to make the experience more authentic. down the road from the springs is the cave and basin national historic site, the original site of the springs enclosed in a breathtaking natural cave. one of my favorite things to do while we are in banff is horseback riding, while i only did it a few times it’s something i always want to go back to. contact banff trail riders for a package that suits your needs. on this most recent trip to the park we also came across some really fun new restaurants that are worth a visit. high rollers is a family pub style bowling alley, it’s beautifully designed and the food is equally satisfying. down the main street stretch is park distillery, making their own spirits right there on the premises, definitely worth to check it out the park espresso vodka and maybe even grab one as a gift.
HAPPY TRAILS!
